The CalArts School of Theater offers a broad range of professional development opportunities to our students and alumni. These initiatives provide a vital bridge for our community as they enter the professional arts and entertainment arena.
The CalArts Center for New Performance is the professional producing arm of California Institute of the Arts, established to develop original theater, music, dance, media and interdisciplinary projects. Each year School of Theater students and alumni are engaged in workshops, professional productions, visiting artist residencies, and arts administration.
The Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) CalArts Educational Initiative is led by CalArts alumnus Michael Jung, Creative Executive of Theatrical Development for Walt Disney Imagineering Live Entertainment. Student work directly with a professional WDI mentor to develop themed entertainment projects. This month-long process culminates in a presentation to Disney executives at WDI headquarters in Burbank. A professional and educational experience of the highest order, past participants have been hired for significant creative positions.
The Portfolio Review is an annual exhibition of work completed by graduating and continuing Experience Design and Production and Creative Producing and Management students. Each year, arts professionals are invited to CalArts to experience the extraordinary work of our students in the fields of live performance, interactive media, installation, immersive and experience design and social practice.
The Actors Showcase is an annual program of graduating actor performances for theater, film and television industry professionals. Developed through a course in their final semester, the showcase is a vital bridge in for graduates entering the professional field. Presented in Los Angeles and New York.
Arts in a Changing America is a new, five-year initiative that seeks to explore and understand the dramatic demographic transformation of the United States and its profound impact on arts and culture. Led by Roberta Uno and based out of the CalArts, it is a catalyst to bring unheard leadership voices to the forefront of social discourse, arts production, and community change.
Internships with ArtChangeUS are offered to our students, with an emphasis on creative producing and management.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Comédie de Saint-Étienne National Drama Center is one of France’s most renowned training centers. Each year French and American students collaborate together through training and workshop exchanges to co-produce professional theatrical projects. In this current season, CalArts students and alumni will travel across Europe with the world premiere of Fore!. This outstanding opportunity gives our students exposure to other cultures, artistic environments, and professional practices.
