Estela Garcia

Estela Garcia

A Los Angeles born native, Estela Garcia is an actress, movement coach, deviser, community engagement specialist, mask maker/performer, and teacher.  She received her MFA from Dell'Arte in ensemble based physical theatre and most recently studied with Viewpoints originator Mary Overlie in England. In addition to being Movement faculty at CalArts, Garcia is faculty at South Coast Repertory and a teaching artists and Community Liaison for Center Theatre Group. Garcia is best known for her portrayal of surrealist painter REMEDIOS VARO in her one-woman play and Older Esperanza in THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. Most recent film credits include: YOLIS and VALENTINA, which have had much success at film festivals nationally and abroad-she is currently filming  A GIANT WITHOUT A HEAD. 

As a director/movement coach, Estela has worked as AD to Kinan Valdez on POPOL VUH: HEART OF HEAVEN, co-produced by Center Theatre Group and El Teatro Campesino, and was Puppetry Director for South Coast Rep’s THE LONG ROAD TODAY.  In addition, she has been the movement coach for countless award winning productions by Rogue Artists Ensemble, for which she is an associate artist. Most notably, she collaborated as a writer/creator/ assistant director/movement coach for Hyperbole: Origins which was nominated for Production of the Year by the LA Weekly Awards.  Most recently she choreographed for SEÑORITA MONTHLY JUICE at 2018’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. 

Garcia has been a guest artist at Cal State LA,  The University of Irvine, Cal State Northridge and East LA Magnet where she helped lead the creation of Ensemble Created Devised Work. 

Garcia is an associate artist with Breath of Fire Latina Theatre Ensemble and a proud member of The Latinx Theatre Alliance/Los Angeles an organization dedicated to empowering the local latinx theatre community through its various programs. Garcia is committed to bridge the gap between underserved communities and art institutions through her extensive work in Community Engagement.

She has worked with SCR, CTG, Teatro Luna,  ARTEL,  About Productions, 24th Street Theatre, Watts Village Theatre, East LA Rep, The Dell’Arte Company, Stefanity Productions, The Grand Guignolers, and Laboratorio de las Mascaras (MX). She has performed in venues such as ArtWorks, Bootleg Theatre, LACMA, The Getty Villa, The Getty Center, El Portal, South Coast Repertory Theatre, The Rosenthal Theatre and The Pasadena Playhouse.

Selected theatre credits include: A House on Mango Street as Esperanza at The Greenway Court Theatre. 14 at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre at University of Michigan. Remedios Varo: La Alquimista presented at The Independents produced by East LA Repertory at The Rosenthal Theater (2013), Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival (2014) and The Fury Factory Festival in SF (2014).
