Carlo Maghirang is an installation artist and environment designer working beyond the boundaries of galleries, theaters, exhibits/events, and film by creating landscapes that both function as ephemeral art objects, as well as performative spaces. He has represented the US as a featured artist for the Prague Quadrennial (Czech Republic, 2015 & 2019), with design features from publications such as the LA Times and LiveDesign. Most recently, he won the La Mama Design Competition award for his site-specific design-work for the opera Sweet Land - Train by The Industry (Los Angeles, 2020).
As both an immigrant and queer artist, his art/design work primarily investigates ‘Otherness’ by plunging the audience into foreign landscapes, often kinetic, transforming relationships with space and self as a gesture towards building empathy. As an Angeleno, he draws inspiration from the city’s constant transformation, manifesting in his works as chimerical structures that change and transform as it is being experienced.
