BFA & MFA Programs

Technical Direction by nature is an ever changing and evolving profession. The skills needed to be professionally proficient are unique in that they are a mix of traditional skills developed from the first stage productions combined with developing and sometimes yet to be commercially available technologies. It is with these skills that the technical director, as the leader of a team of technical designers, technicians and craftspeople, is able to generate a tangible world from abstract ideas, drawings and conversations.

The Technical Direction Program at CalArts focuses on the group experience in collaborative design, fabrication and technical management. The goal of the program is to be an innovative force in the theatrical art form not only in theater but in themed environments, film, art and all other avenues graduates of the program find themselves in.

Though the BFA and MFA programs are separate, they do grow together, advancing with changes in technologies and aesthetics. Both programs are based on four basic principles: fabrication, communication, management and artistic awareness with the BFA program having more of an emphasis on the tangible and the MFA program on technical design and management. These principles are worked into not only every production experience but all metier coursework.
