The CalArts School of Theater has a number of special programs to expand the scope of the education our students undertake outside of our classrooms, studios, and theater spaces. There are opportunities for professional development through our showcases and portfolio reviews and regular international collaboration with Arts in the One World and Edinburgh.
An annual gathering comprised of performances, lectures, exhibits, and screenings hosted by the California Institute of the Arts School of Theater, conceived and executed in collaboration with the broad participation of the Institute as a whole. Students and faculty from CalArts and around the world, along with the general public, are invited to discuss and present on the ways artistic, political, and historical purposes intersect (reconciliation, the recovery of historical memory, advocacy for justice, the formation and maintenance of sites for expression, and the creation of knowledge.)
A space for student-generated, interdisciplinary work from all schools. Students are invited to experiment, explore, and submit work in any discipline—this is a chance to do work outside your metier and collaborate with students from across the institute. It’s a unique space at CalArts, not limited to work done in your classes or program, and it’s the best place for you to explore new collaborations and different art forms.
This summer program of the CalArts School of Theater will travel a group of student performers, designers, technicians and faculty to perform in and experience the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, held annually each August in Edinburgh, Scotland. With the continued support of the Theater School, we will continue our performance alliances with the Royal Scottish and Royal Welsh Academies of Music and Drama. For the past seven summers three groups have formed a performance company and jointly presented work at Venue 13 during this amazing arts festival. The major goals of the CalArts Festival Theater Program involve continued personal and professional enrichment for our students and faculty in this very special arts festival setting and service to the Institute as a whole by exposing the CalArts Theater brand to the international emerging artists scene.
The aim of the New Works Festival is to foster opportunities for collaboration among all Schools of the Institute and to celebrate the talent of CalArts students. This is a festival of the students, by the students and for the students, cultivating the growth of a collaborative, fun, and creative atmosphere within the CalArts community, and allowing students the freedom to play and experiment with new work where the process is valued above the end result.
An annual exhibition of work completed by graduating and continuing Design & Production Students.
An annual program of graduating actor performances for theater, film and televsion industry professionals.
